It's now been more than two weeks since things fell apart completely at the Memphis Sexual Assault Resource Center. At least two young girls were turned away by the center in their hour of need.

It's been three months since problems at the center were officially brought to the attention of Mayor Willie Herenton's administration by Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons, and yet last weekend, many of its shifts were still not staffed- a situation that leaves rape victims without a lifeline and has the potential to let their attackers go free.

And now, the latest chapter in this saga is a major discrepancy in the center's finances.  Hundreds of thousands of dollars in state reimbursements for the center seem to be ending up somewhere else.

I've seen pictures showing the front entrance of this facility and Mayor Herenton's name is stenciled right on the front window, so I take that as his claim to be the authority responsible for the proper operation of this facility.

Mayor, this is a time sensitive matter, and we're still waiting.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
