MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC-TV) - Memphis police are investigating a disturbing Craigslist post offering a baby for sale in Cordova.

Police started receiving calls Thursday night from citizens concerned about the ad, which offered a 4-month-old girl for the asking price of $7,000.

"You want to hope this is just a hoax, and you pray no one is going to sell their child on Craigslist," said Sgt. Lambert Ross with the Memphis Police Department.

The post on the popular Web site has since been removed.

Sue Parker with Life Choices, a Memphis agency that facilitates adoptions, says she sincerely hopes the ad was a hoax.

"I think sometimes desperation makes people do things that common sense tells them on some level they shouldn't," she said.

Parker says that if the post was legitimate, she hopes the intention of the baby's mother wasn't to make money, but to provide a better life for the child. "Just to find a family that would be able to serve than need."
Memphis police are treating the post as legitimate until they determine otherwise.

If you know who posted the ad, Memphis police ask that you contact them.
