Robbery suspect dies in car crash

BARTLETT, TN (WMC-TV) - A robbery suspect died in a single-car accident early Monday morning.

According to Bartlett police, Travis Hewlett, 39, was traveling southbound on Altruria Road from Stage Road just after 3:00 a.m. Monday when he left the roadway, struck a utility pole and then a tree.

Officials said Hewlett had attempted to rob the drive-in of a McDonalds drive through, where he indicated he had a gun.  He then went to a Mapco Store on Stage Road, where he held up the clerk, taking tobacco products.

Bartlett police spokesperson Lt. Rory Mack said Hewlett was captured on video by surveillance cameras during the hold-up.

As police were being notified about the robbery, a Bartlett police officer saw a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the area.  A short time later, officers located Hewlett and his vehicle at the scene of the wreck.

Mack said no other cars were involved in the accident, and Bartlett police never pursued Hewlett.
