Kingsbury Falcons Head To TN Soccer State Championships

Posted: Updated:

A history making season continues to make history at Kingsbury High School.

The Falcons Soccer Team is going to the State Tournament for the First Time in the History of the program.

Kingsbury recently won the First Ever MIAA City Title, finished second in the Region, and won the Sectional to qualify for Spring Fling in Murfreesboro.

And they're doing it with a roster that reads like Roll Call at the United Nations.

Most of the 18 players on the team were born in other countries. From the Sudan, like Striker Fahkry Khulfan, to China, like Defender Eugene Chen, to Mexico, like Midfielder Francisco Diaz.

Other players hail from places like Liberia and Somalia... Even the Head Coach, Jihad Haidar, hails from another land...Lebanon.

"Our diversity is what makes us strong."  Says Haidar. "As an E.L.L. (English Language Learning) School, we have 134 different languages and countries represented. We are soo proud of what we do, and the kids are very proud of what they've accomplished."

Midfielder Diaz says it was difficult, at first, getting all the players to play together.

"We really have two styles merging together.. The African style, which is very strong and forceful, and the Mexican style, which is fluid.. Kind of like a dance.. and we bring them together and it makes us tough."

Adds Striker Khulfan, "It's not too difficult if you can play Soccer. Soccer is the universal language. We all rally around the game.  Once we get playing we mostly speak English and Spanish on the field. That is how we can communicate."

Kingsbury, along with White Station, will represent Memphis in the Class AAA State Quarterfinals on Wednesday in Murfreesboro.

It's the First Time for two City Schools to break the strangle hold either Houston, Germantown, or Collierville have had representing West Tennessee in the Division-1 State Tournament.
