MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC-TV) - The murder trial of former Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Jones is winding to a close.

Jurors will get their final instructions from the judge at 8:30 Friday morning, and deliberations will begin.

Jones is accused in the shooting death of a popular karaoke deejay and the wounding of two patrons at The Windjammer Restaurant in Lounge in East Memphis.

Jurors will have to decide whether Jones committed murder or was acting in self-defense.

When Jones took the stand Thursday, he testified that he fired in self-defense.

"I just knew I had several men on top of me, and I knew to save my life. I had to fire my pistol," he said.

Prosecutors argue that Jones intended to kill a bar patron with whom he had been arguing. In the melee that followed, deejay Donald Munsey was instead shot and killed after he tried to break up the fight.

Jones says the argument began when a drunk customer threatened his life.

"'You try to leave, we're gonna kill you.' And when he said 'It's time for you to die', that's when I was scared, terrified more than I've every been in my life," said Jones.

Jones was the only person to produce a weapon that night, claiming he had it on his person all day.

A trip to his truck to get the gun would suggest premeditated murder.

Prosecutors asked Jones to reenact how his gun might have been tucked into his jeans for more than six hours.

Prosecutors pointed out that the veteran law enforcement officer broke the law by taking his gun into a bar, and they said Jones elevated a minor situation into murder.
