SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - At the Southaven Citgo on Church Road, it was business as usual Friday, despite the unusual circumstances.

"When I first pulled up and saw the destruction we had, I was just, I started crying," owner Tiffany Bass said.

Bass had plenty to cry about.  Someone had used a vehicle to smash into one of the main windows of her store in a late night smash and grab.

"Our registers were not touched. No beer was taken. No cigarettes. No tobacco, nothing," she said.

But one thing was missing - an ATM machine that had been bolted to the ground.

Bass opened her store Friday, even though it will be Wednesday before she can replace much of the broken glass. In the meantime, large pieces of plywood will cover the enormous hole the thieves left.

Bass' store is not alone.  From Alex's Mart to the Castalia Supermarket, Memphis police are working at least a dozen smash and grabs inside city limits since March.

Now, Southaven police believe the thieves are moving south.

"It appears they're trying to expand their territory some," Southaven Police Deputy Chief Steve Pirtle said.

Pirtle says investigators found the car that smashed into Bass' store - a Jeep that was stolen from Memphis. That's part of the reason why police believe the same thieves have crossed state lines.

"We'll be watching extremely close now," Pirtle said.

After all, the ATM is still out there somewhere, and the crooks are still on the loose.
