MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Picked up by news outlets from San Francisco to London, the story about a Memphis shoplifter throwing a baby to escape arrest has everyone talking.

"That's really sad," Ray Collier said Friday.

Collier is even more upset knowing his own neighbor is accused of the crime.  They share a duplex near the airport.

"I'm shocked," he said. "I mean, you just never know."

Camilla Fields, 24, is being held on child neglect charges after turning herself in.  She's accused of throwing her two-month-old nephew at both a loss prevention officer and a good samaritan after she was caught shoplifting at a Wal-Mart in Raleigh.

According to her record of arrest, Fields "grabbed the car seat from the shopping cart and threw it" when she was confronted by the officer.

She threw the baby once again when a witness chased her into the parking lot. According to the arrest record, "the car seat with the victim still strapped inside fell to the pavement face down."

The witness happened to be an EMT and resuscitated the infant as his aunt got away.

The baby's mother claimed to be in the bathroom the whole time and told police she did not know her sister was planning to steal.

"I mean, she seemed like a nice person and everything," Collier said.

He says it's proof you never really know your neighbors.
