Police dog loses job due to budget cuts

ABERDEEN, Washington (NBC News) - A police dog has lost his job as a result of budget cuts at the Aberdeen Police Department.

Nitro, a six-year-old German Shepherd, was laid off earlier this month.

The K-9 has been with the police force since 2005 and has helped capture between 35 and 40 suspects.

The police chief said laying off Nitro will save the department about $12,000 annually. Most of that money was overtime paid for Nitro's care during his off-duty hours.

The dog's partner, Officer Steve Timmons, says he wants to work with the city to eliminate the overtime. He says he would also like to donate his own time, but he says federal rules and labor laws won't permit him to do so.

Nitro is now staying with Timmons.
