MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police have charged a man in the weekend death of a three-year-old.

Police charged Antonio Starks, 24, with first degree murder in perpetration of aggravated child abuse/neglect.  Additionally, police charged the child's mother, Nekela Oliver, 29, with accessory after the fact.

Investigators said three-year old Amilyia Oliver was taken to Delta Medical Hospital by Oliver and Starks around 12:45 Saturday afternoon. The little girl was unresponsive when she arrived at the emergency room, and died a short time later

Officers were called to the hospital on a possible child abuse case, and both Starks and Oliver were detained for questioning.

A report from the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s office ruled Amilyia's death a homicide due to blunt force trauma to the head. Investigators said Starks may have been the only adult with the little girl at the time of her injuries, while her mother was at work.

The incident occurred at their home at the 400 block of Walker sometime in the morning.  Investigators said a statement to police by Oliver that a babysitter was responsible for the abuse to the child could not be substantiated, leading to the accessory charge.

A seven-year old boy in the home has been placed in protective custody by the Department of Children’s Services.
