MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A 12-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting late Tuesday night, according to Memphis police.

Investigators said the shooting happened around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday in the 4000 block of Chuck Avenue.

A 16-year-old boy was charged with aggravated assault and unlawful possession of a weapon in the shooting.

The shooting victim was taken to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in critical condition.

Memphis Police Department spokesperson Monique Martin said investigators are still trying to determine how the 16-year-old came into possession of the gun.

"We have not recovered the weapon at this time, and that is part of the investigation - to determine who owned the weapon and where that gun is at this time," Martin said.

In a preliminary investigation, police were told an unknown male gave the gun to the boys.

Investigators say a 13-year-old boy, another relative, was with the other two at the time. He was not able to offer much helpful information.

Police say whoever gave the teen the gun could face charges.
