DeSoto supervisors OK bond issue

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County supervisors will borrow $16 million for jail improvements and several roads.

The board of supervisors voted Wednesday to issue bonds for the money.

Demery Grubbs, the county's financial adviser, says officials will pay off two old bonds and use tax proceeds pledged to pay that debt to repay the new bonds.

An advisory committee has been reviewing about a dozen sites where the jail and a justice complex might be located. No firm recommendation has been submitted.

County Administrator Michael Garriga says he expects to have an architect working on the design of the jail within eight months, whether the design is for improving the facility in Hernando or a new jail.
