MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Breaking and entering to steal drugs inside a Walgreens store may not sound like an unusual crime, but it was how the thieves got in to the Walgreens on Getwell that had authorities scratching their heads Thursday morning.

Early Thursday morning, burglars so desperate to get drugs out of the Getwell Road Walgreens that they tore through a brick wall.  Police believe they did it to get their hands on hydrocodone, an, addictive high-end narcotic usually prescribed for severe pain.

The burglars managed to get away with a large amount of the pain killer.  Meanwhile, the impact of the crash sent bricks flying all across the parking lot.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency says the abuse of Hydrocodone is escalating. The DEA says hydrocodone products cause more emergency room visits than any other prescription opiate.  The drug, which offers an effect similar to morphine, is popular on the black market.

The damaged from the robbery forced the Walgreens on Getwell to shut down its drive through pharmacy Thursday morning.

Police say there was no report of an alarm sounding.  A delivery man discovered the damage at 4:30 in the morning.
