It's a matter of profound sadness that a city with the potential of Memphis, Tennessee is being held back by its mayor, a man who continually tries to keep the city divided along racial lines.

Mayor Willie Herenton hit a new low with his racial oratory during a meeting this week with the Memphis City Council. Herenton met with council members to answer their concerns about the recent problems at the Memphis Sexual Assault Resource Center.

In his typical combative style, Herenton accused council members of not showing the same level of concern when two African American teens drowned last summer.

This is wrong on so many levels. As a factual matter, council members and many other citizens did express grave concerns about those drownings and major safety changes were made.

The City of Memphis could make so much more progress with a mayor who worked to unite our community. Heck, we could move ahead a lot better than we are now if we just had a mayor who would keep his racially insensitive thoughts to himself.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
