MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Members of an an East Memphis church showed up for services Sunday morning to discover vandals had spray-painted racial slurs and profanities on the sanctuary doors and other parts of the building.

Pastor Frederick Smith says this is the second time New Life Holiness Church has been vandalized. A similar incident happened two years ago when the congregation moved to its current location on Vera Cruz Street.

"So, when we first moved in, they cut the marquee down," he said. "They broke a window, they sprayed some racial things on the back of the church."

Smith feels his church was singled out because the majority of its members are African American.

"It's the mindset of some people that have a problem with a black church in the neighborhood," he said.

Smith says he and his congregation will pray for the people responsible for desecrating a house of worship.

"The people that are responsible for it, I would first have to pray for them," he said. "That they would come to the house of God and damage God's property, and I would pray the lord would save them."

Memphis police spent the morning taking photographs for evidence and searching the surrounding neighborhood for clues as to who may be responsible for the crime.

They are asking anyone with information about the vandalism to call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH.
