MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Are you ready for the big switch to digital television Friday?  If not, experts from the FCC are in town to help you make sure everything is set up correctly.

Friday's DTV switch over is one of the biggest changes in television history, and that's why people are lining up to hear how to install the new converter boxes and hopefully make sense of all the changes.

In an activity room Tuesday at the Graceland Gardens Senior Citizens complex in Whitehaven, seniors crowded around to hear staffers from the FCC explain how the entire country must switch to Digital TV by Friday.

"It's kind of confusing, though, for some people," said Marion Woolridge, who attended the event.

You could see puzzled looks on a lot of faces, as staffers demonstrated how the new converter boxes must be hooked up in order for you to see TV programs in the future...

"We really like to think everybody knows about it. It's just whether or not they've taken to steps to be prepared," said FCC presenter Kathryn Power.

And FCC officials say right now, the problem is that there is no sure way of knowing just how many people actually have their televisions ready for Friday's conversion.

"I'm an optimist, I'd like to think yes, but I'm afraid that some people aren't," Power said.

About DTV:
Digital television (DTV) is an advanced broadcasting technology that improves picture and sound quality, and provides more channels and program choices.  The switch from analog to digital was authorized by the U.S. Congress, with June 12, 2009, as the final date when full- power television stations must cease broadcasting analog signals.  In addition to its other benefits, the switch to digital broadcasts will free up valuable spectrum for public safety communications (such as police, fire departments and rescue squads), and advanced mobile wireless services (such as wireless broadband). For the latest and most up-to-date information, please visit www.dtv.gov, or contact the DTV hotline, an extension of the FCC Consumer Center’s existing toll free number, at 1-888-CALLFCC (1-888-225-5322). News about the Federal Communications Commission can also be found on the Commission’s website www.fcc.gov.
