MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A top player and a hometown favorite are ready to take a swing at the St. Jude Classic, but Wednesday they were off the course, talking about their personal lives.

One of the first things fans at the St. Jude Classic are noticing about golfer John Daly is how trim he looks walking around the golf course.

"You know, I decided that I would get my John Daly Enterprises back on track losing weight," Daly said.

Daly told reporters at the tournament that his slimmer body is due to lap-band surgery, a procedure that uses a band to reduce the size of the stomach.
A fan favorite at the classic, Daly said he's put a troubled past behind him. The new John Daly recently launched a new line of loud colored clothing, which seems to be doing well at the cash register.

Earlier in the week, Daly sported a pair of loud pink pants in support of fellow golfer Phil Mickelson and his wife's battle with breast cancer.

"We are going through a tough time right now," Mickelson said.

At the news conference, Mickelson thanked all of the people who supported him, admitting battling cancer has taken a toll on his entire family.

"Kind of an interesting thing is that I have never felt this emotional," he said. "I've never been this emotional, where I'm driving alone and I'll just start crying. It's a weird thing."

Both Mickelson and Daly praised the cancer treatment break made possible by St. Jude hospital, and said this tournament, which benefits St Jude, is an honor to participate in.

Mickelson said his wife begins her cancer treatment next month, while Daly said he's not done losing weight, and hopes to get down to 190 pounds.
