Bartlett teen struck by train, loses leg

BARTLETT, TN (WMC-TV) - Bartlett police are trying to determine how a train struck a teenager.

Officers were called to the railroad tracks that pass under Kirby Whitten Road around 6:00 a.m. Thursday.  There, they found the injured 19-year-old victim lying near the tracks.

The victim, identified as Matthew Kyle Patterson, suffered severe injuries to his lower extremities, and lost a leg when he was struck.

Investigators said the train's operator activated its emergency breaking system when the teen was spotted, but it was too late to stop.

Police are not sure why Patterson was lying on the tracks.
