MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Former congressman Harold Ford Sr. is holding two fundraisers for incumbent U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen.

The Washington bureau of The Commercial Appeal reported Wednesday that Ford is organizing a June 24 fundraiser in Washington and a June 30 event in Memphis.

The move indicates the politically prominent Ford family, which represented Memphis in Congress from 1975 through 2006, isn't supporting Mayor Willie Herenton, who is considering challenging Cohen in the Democratic primary next year.

Political analyst Dr. Larry Moore said the fundraisers aren't surprising, and show a long-running political rivalry between Ford and Herenton is continuing.

"Mayor Herenton and Ford Senior have had their differences over the years," Moore said.

Moore believes the match-up would be a very different kind of political race for Memphis.

"Probably the first wide-open election since the modern era of interracial voting in this city," Moore said.

Moore believes people would vote for their candidate without consideration for race.
