MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A disturbing act of animal cruelty involving a pit bull left Northaven residents shaken Friday. Overnight, a dog was cut open and left for dead, hanging on a fence in the neighborhood.

News of the discovery quickly spread throughout Northaven.

"My little kids seen it," Ethan Swims said. "I had to sleep with them last night so they wouldn't have any bad dreams."

Many others echoed the same sentiment about the very public and graphic case of animal cruelty.

Officials said a passerby first noticed the dog just before midnight, dead, hanging from a chain link fence outside a collapsed house on an abandoned piece of property.  Witnesses said it had been cut open, from its throat all the way down its underbelly.

Friday afternoon, dried blood covered the grass underneath.

"We don't know whether or not this might have been gang related," Shelby County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Steve Shular said. "We have no idea whether it might've been some sort of retaliation. We just don't know what the motive is."

Deputies spent Friday canvassing Northaven, saying the case was a high priority.

"If they could do that to an animal, lord knows what they could do to a human," Swims said.

Investigators desperately want to find the dog's owner, and its killer.  If you have information that could help, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
