Some still without power as heat bears down

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - As some Mid-Southerners began their sixth day without power following last week's storm, they had to deal with the added problem of scorching heat.

The thermometer inside Carleen Malone's home shot up to above 90 degrees Thursday morning.

Melons' 84-year old mother has heart problems, and they've both struggled with hot temperatures ever since last Friday's storm knocked out their power.

"I'm here I'm on my oxygen machine, and it was just a scary thing, no electricity," Malone said.

Even more scary is that in the past few days, the heat has increased Malone's asthma attacks.

"You just have to ask God to give you the strength, that's all you can do," Malone said.

Just when the Malones felt that they couldn't take another minute without power, MLGW crews showed up to restore her electricity...

A foreman said it was just a coincidence that they turned on the electricity when they did, although Malone was convinced that our visit to her house had something to do with it.

"I feel good, because if I hadn't called Channel 5, they wouldn't have been here, and we would have had to wait another two or three days," she said.

Late Thursday afternoon, officials at MLGW said just under 4,000 customers were still without power.  Crews are working 24 hours a day in 16 hour shifts to restore electricity to those without.
