SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - A Mixed Martial Arts show is on tap Friday night in Southaven, but officials say you should prepare for the heat if you plan on attending the outdoor event.

The scorching heat the Mid-South is currently experiencing can be a very dangerous thing, especially if you spend much time outdoors.

"The wind is blowing today, which gives you a sense of coolness, when in essence your still perspiring out, and your not going to get the water that you need to re-hydrate," said DeSoto County EMA Director Bobby Storey.

Mixed Martial Arts is the fastest growing sport in the world, attracting thousands to their shows.  Promoter Max Bishop. who is bringing a show to Snowden Grove Amphitheater in Southaven Friday night, expects 1,000 to 2,000 people to fill the seats.

He says great fan interest keeps him very busy.

"We fight somewhere every weekend, and that's usually two to three shows," he said. "Probably in the states of Arkansas and Tennessee within a two hour driving range, two to three shows per weekend available for anybody."

Storey says with events like mix martial arts, it's okay to have fun and enjoy yourself, but you should use common sense and exercise some caution when the heat is on.

"The one thing I ask is look around for some water," he said. "If you don't take water, ask somebody there. I'm sure they will have some water kegs out. Re-hydrate and everything should be good."

Storey added if you are going to be spending considerable time outdoors in the heat, you should not consume any alcohol of any kind, and wear a hat and light colored clothing.
