Firefighters battle apartment blaze and hot weather

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Dangerously hot weather posed an additional threat as Memphis firefighters battled a blaze at a vacant apartment building Saturday afternoon.

Crews responded to a fire at the empty Red Oaks Apartments around 1:30.

Fire officials are investigating what caused the fire. No one was injured.

To prevent exhaustion and dehydration, teams took turns fighting the flames while rehab companies were on hand to provide water and gatorade.

"Along with the heat, a lot of exhaustion is exerted," said MPD Battalion Chief Batsell Booker. "So, we have those companies here, and we try and exchange the teams. Get them fresh water, cool them down."
