Double murder suspect captured

DUNCAN, MS (WMC-TV) - Police have arrested a man in the shooting deaths of his former girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter and the child's grandmother execution-style in Bolivar County.

Bolivar County Sheriff Mack Grimmett said 42-year-old Harvey Lewis of Rosedale was spotted by a Shelby police officer about 8:40 p.m. Tuesday walking along a Mississippi 32.

Lewis faces two counts of capital murder in the alleged kidnapping and slaying of 44-year-old Michelle Walker and her granddaughter, Janiya Williams. Grimmett said he is accused of shooting them in the head then leaving their bodies on U.S. 61 just north of the town of Duncan.

He said Lewis allegedly killed them in an attempt to upset his unidentified ex-girlfriend, who had filed domestic violence charges against him.

Witnesses told investigators Lewis forced the pair out of a house in Darling, Mississippi and into a pick-up truck just before 12:30 Tuesday morning.

At 5:44 a.m., on Highway 61 just inside the Bolivar County line, a delivery truck driver discovered the two bodies, shot dead on the side of the road.

"Tough case for me to ride up there this morning to see a child been done like that," said Bolivar County's Chief Investigator, Charlie Griffin.

"I've been a sheriff 29 years, and this is one of the worst crime scenes I've ever seen," Grimmett added.

Griffin confirmed the bodies were those of Michelle Walker and Janiya Williams, who were both shot in the head at close range with a shotgun. The grandmother was found lying face down on the ground with the child laying on her back.

By late Tuesday afternoon, the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation were all participating in an all out manhunt for Lewis.
