SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - The Mid-South Fair kicks off a new location in less than three months.  Before the Mid-South Fair makes its permanent home in Tunica next year, it will first stop in Southaven. Officials say it will be a time to shine, and come September, they will be ready.

Chuck Roberts, Vice President of this year's event, said Tuesday that things are progressing along nicely for the fair and beyond.

"We have been meeting with the local utility companies, local law enforcement, planning for traffic, planning for water, sewer and power needs," Roberts said.

One of the biggest needs will involve having additional space for the various attractions the fair will bring. Roberts said DeSoto County recently purchased several acres of land adjacent to the DeSoto Civic Center.

"To level the 28 acres that we purchased last year," he said. "We're certainly working to get that done in advance of the fair.

Roberts said the land purchase was not directly for the fair, but it will no doubt come in handy. Fairgoers like Vernida Taylor said it would be good to have the annual event a bit closer to home.

"It's closer for my grand kids to go," she said. "It's about five or ten minutes away, and I think its great."

Fairgoer Renee Robertson said she thought moving the fair would make it safer.

"It will be a lot more safer down here, and I can take my little cousins and nephews down here, so it won't be that bad," she said.
