DUNCAN, MS (WMC-TV) - A Mississippi man charged with kidnapping and murdering his mother-in-law and niece appeared in court Wednesday.

Harvey Lewis is charged with murdering his mother-in-law, Michelle Walker, and her 4-year-old granddaughter Janiya Williams

Investigators said Lewis kidnapped the pair in Quitman County, and later shot them in the head and left their bodies off Highway 61 in Mississippi.

After a day-long manhunt, authorities discovered Lewis Tuesday night off Highway 32 South in Bolivar County.  Detectives said they found Lewis with the help of someone in Bolivar County who flagged down two officers while they were on routine patrol.  The passerby said they saw someone fitting Lewis' description walking along side of the road near a place of worship - Saint James Church.

Charlie Griffin of the Bolivar County Sheriff's Department said when authorities caught up to Lewis, he surrendered without putting up a fight.

"He complied with what they ordered," Griffin said. "He put his arms up, hands up, and was arrested.  He complied."

Investigators are now looking for evidence to Lewis with the scene of the crime.  As for a motive, detectives say they believe the double murders may have stemmed from an argument.

Lewis remains in the Bolivar County Jail, facing two capital murder charges in Bolivar County and two counts of kidnapping in Quitman County.
