Memphians weigh in on Herenton's decision

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - No matter who you asked, people across the Mid-South were weighing Thursday in on Mayor Willie Herenton's decision to resign.

"For him to be there 18 years, he had to do a good job," Cordie Lewis said. "You just don't get re-elected or put there not doing nothing, so I think he did a pretty good job."

While the mayor said he's stepping down to focus on his race for the 9th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Steve Cohen, residents we caught up with in Raleigh said they stand behind Herenton's decision.

"When a person runs for one office, they should give up the office they hold," David Woods said.

Other supporters, near LeMoyne-Owen College in south Memphis, said the mayor has represented the city well over the years.

"At the beginning all the way to about the last term and a half, he did a pretty good job," Willie Colbert said.

But that wasn't the case in Midtown, where some residents who watched the mayor's announcement on TV say his decision to step down couldn't have come soon enough.

"I think he's been bad for the city," Mike Thorton said. "He does his best to defy his constituents.  It's time for new leadership."

"I will hold my breath until July 10th and see if it actually happens," Karen Markle added. "He's said this before."
