MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The King of Pop is being mourned in the birthplace of rock 'n roll.

Music icon Michael Jackson touched the lives of many Mid-Southerners. In a city known for music, there runs a deep, undeniable affinity for the King of Pop.

As news of his death spread Thursday, Memphians sang favorite songs and shared memories of Jackson.

"I have a lot of Michael Jackson memorabilia that I collected as a kid," said Stephanie Miller of Memphis. "I have the baseball cards that they had a long time ago. It's in like a bubble gum wrapper."

Over at Graceland, a touring Candian rock band made an unscheduled stop after hearing news of Jackson's death.

"He did a lot for music, same as Elvis did, too," said band member Adam Whiteford.

Elvis's only daughter, Lisa Marie, married Michael Jackson. The couple visited Memphis together in 1995.

In a statment released Thursday, ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley said, "I am so very sad and confused with every emotion possible. I am heartbroken for his children who I know were everything to him, and for his family. This is such a massive loss on so many levels, words fail me."

Michael Jackson is gone at age 50, but Memphians join fans around the world in celebrating the King of Pop's musical legacy.
