One week, he's on the Scam Cam.
The next, he's in a Georgia jail -- because YOU put him there!
Georgia authorities arrested and charged 45-year-old Billy Perry, Jr., of Greenwood, MS, with theft and a weapon charge.
A week ago, the Action News 5 Scam Cam captured him three times at a Wolfchase-area department store. Each time, he used a cutting device to snip a $300 Sony Reader Digital Book right off the shelf and conceal it in his clothes.
Dee Bowling, detective with the Shelby County Sheriff ALERT Unit (Area Law Enforcement & Retailers Team), says Perry, Jr., has stolen about $6,000 worth of the Sony readers at stores in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.
His theft and other shoplifters' schemes run the tab up on each Sony Reader Digital Book an extra $1.58 per reader to cover the losses.
After the first story, tips poured into both Action News 5 and ALERT's phone and e-mail tip lines. Every one of them identified Perry, Jr., as the suspect.
ALERT contacted the Greenwood, MS, police department. Retailers in five states shared our Scam Cam footage.
Days later Perry, Jr., was identified at a Morrow, GA, department store, stealing yet another Sony reader.
"Immediately, all the employees in the (Georgia store) recognized him off the bat," says Bowling. "The cutting device he was using up here turned out to be a box-cutter down there. That's an additional charge in Georgia."
Bowling says Perry, Jr., is held on more than $15,000 bond. If he makes bond, Bowling says he will be extradited to one of the five states, each with felony warrants waiting. Bowling says Perry, Jr., also faces a pending indictment in Horn Lake, MS.
His capture would not have happened without the tips you sent to ALERT and to Andy Wise. Continue to e-mail Andy at email@example.com with your tips on the thieves you see on Stop Thief! or call ALERT's tip line at 901-756-LOSS.
