MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Mid-Southerners are doing all kinds of things to beat the sweltering heat, including depending on cooling centers.

When we caught up with 61-year old Willie Love, the Binghampton senior citizen was shooting pool at the Lester Community Center.

Lester is one of 28 community centers that have been set up around the city for Memphians to go to and cool off from the heat.

For love, the situation is especially dire, because he currently has no electricity at his home.

"As you can see, my utilities - the switch for my utilities - are off," he said. "It's been off for basically about eight months, and that's why I go to the center to try to keep cool."

Love says his utility bill is around $700, and he doesn't know when he will be able to pay to get his services on again.  So, he says folks at the community center can expect to see a lot of him as long as temperatures continue to go up at his house.

"It's probably a hundred and something in here...I wouldn't exactly say how much, but I'm sure it's one hundred plus," he said.
