MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis residents who normally have their trash picked up on Mondays are in for some new changes, and it has nothing to do with the upcoming holiday.

The City of Memphis is reorganizing their trash pick-up schedule in an effort to keep fees down.

In one Midtown neighborhood, the garbage pick-up day will shift from Mondays to Fridays starting next month.

Neighbor John Marshall says he's not happy about the change.
"Mondays really worked really well for us. I travel a little bit and I usually leave on Sunday, so it's nice to get all of the garbage out in the alley before I leave on my trips," he said.

Over the next several days, sanitation crews will place stickers on trash cans to let residents know which day of the week garbage trucks will come by their homes.
Sanitation officials say the goal is to concentrate equipment in patterns that run from East Memphis to the west.

The changes are expected to increase efficiency while saving taxpayers dollars in light of rising gas prices.

And to help free up some city crews, a private contractor called All Star Waste System has been hired to help with some collection routes.
