MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis' new garbage collection system opened up a whole new can of problems in east Memphis Tuesday.

"If this is an indication of what it's going to be like, then there will be lots and lots of problems," resident Sonny Robinson said.

Robinson said cans were left in the street, dented and broken.

"Went out and looked at it and the wheel was actually broken," Robinson said.

"I put everyone's can back in their yard out of the street," resident Harriet Honsa said.  Then, she called Action News 5.

Dwan Gilliam, who was in the neighborhood already, arrived on Honsa's street before we did.  Gilliam said he would work to clean up the problem.

"We are in talks with the owners of All Star Waste," he said. "We are going to make some adjustments to the type of container that's being used."

Meanwhile, on another street, the problem was messier.  Trash trucks never arrived on King's Arm, even though their pick-up date is Tuesday.

"You have the trash out, you're like a little Chicago," Carl Robinson said. "The rats will start coming around.

And as the garbage spilled over, patience ran out.

"It's very frustrating when your garbage is running over," Robinson said.

"He promises things will be straightened out this week.  We'll see," Honsa said.

For people in East Memphis, their case isn't yet closed.
