MPD Officers suspended and demoted

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Administrative hearings were held for two Memphis Police officers Wednesday as a result of an internal investigation into a police incident involving Memphis City Council member Wanda Halbert's son, Kelvin Burrus.

As a result of the hearings, Major R. Cunningham was given a 20 day suspension for personal conduct and demoted to the rank of Lieutenant for neglect of duty.  Lt. Colonel L. Jamison was also given a 20 day suspension for personal conduct and demoted to the rank of Major for neglect of duty.

Burrus was issued a misdemeanor citation for marijuana possession but not arrested during a disturbance in June.  Councilwoman Halbert was called to the scene by law enforcement but an earlier investigation into the incident found that Halbert acted as a concerned parent, and did not interfere or attempt to influence officers.
