MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis child was hospitalized Friday after she was struck by a car while running from fireworks.

Witnesses said a group of neighborhood children were outside shooting fireworks Friday afternoon when one of the children tossed a lit firecracker in 3-year-old Asia Mayes'direction.

"He popped a firecracker," cousin Maurice Turner said. "It made my little cousin go in the street."

As Asia ran into the street, she was struck by an oncoming car.

According to witnesses, the little girl's older brother quickly scooped her up and carried her to a driveway.

Witnesses said she briefly lost consciousness, but quickly came to.

For nearly an hour, Memphis police officers detained the driver of the car that struck the child. They didn't say whether or not he received a ticket.

The man's wife said he was left shaken by the incident.

Neighbor Cirby Pearson said the close call could have been much worse. "It could have been anybody else out here that got hit," she said. "It could have been my little sister or my little brother. It could've been anybody."

Family members said they expect Asia to make a full recovery.
