July 4th shootings in Memphis leave 5 dead, others injured

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Shootings in Memphis this Fourth of July left five people dead and many more injured.

Two women and a child were found shot in the 600 block of Mosby just after 1:00 Saturday morning.

The women were transported to the Regional Medical Center. One of them, 18-year-old Kawanda Wainwright, died a short while later.

The child was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center and is expected to recover.

A possible suspect has been identified, but no charges have been filed.

About an hour later, a 17-year-old male was found shot in a driveway in the 900 Block of East Holmes. The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

And just before 1:00 p.m. Saturday, a man who has not been identified died at St. Francis Hospital after he was shot in the 3400 Block of Lichterman.

Just before 2:00 p.m., 43-year-old Charlie Jones, Jr., was shot in the 800 Block of West Raines Road. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

A father and son were shot in the 5000 block of Christopher Avenue around 9:00 Saturday night, after an argument with a third man. 57-year-old James Balentine died. His 24-year-old son, James Balentine, Jr., is hospitalized in non-critical condition.

These investigations are ongoing.
