MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Search crews pulled the body of teenage drowning victim from a private lake in Cordova Sunday afternoon.
16-year-old Demario Tyms disappeared while swimming with relatives in Walnut Grove Lake on the Fourth of July.
Around 6:30 Saturday evening, City of Memphis and Shelby County officials launched a search, bringing in divers, search dogs, sonar equipment and a helicopter.
They discovered Tyms' body after an extensive search that lasted more than 20 hours.
"You know the water the bottom of that lake, it's pitch black," said diver Barry Poole. "You know, we can really see nothing at all with our eyes. So, we go down and feel with our hands, use ropes to determine where we have been, and try to feel for anything on the bottom."
Laquita Tyms, the victim's aunt, says he was a strong swimmer.
"He loved the water. He taught his oldest brother and one of his youngest brothers how to swim," she said. "He was a good swimmer. I didn't think anything like this...this is not what I was prepared for. Not at all."
