OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC-TV) - With the explosion of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, communicating to a widespread audience has become commonplace.

That's why the Olive Branch Police Department is now using the websites as a part of its community policing efforts.

"I was looking at Twitter and Facebook, and noticed that some agencies in Florida and some other agencies tried it," Major Tim Presley said. "I read a couple of articles of how successful they were, so I thought we would give it a try here."

In March, the police department signed up on both sites in an effort to better keep the community informed about what they were doing. Presley said the sites allow for better two-easy communication between the department and Olive Branch residents.

"They're able to notify us of things," Presley said. "We're able to notify them of road closings...suspect descriptions."

And, Presley said, a variety of other necessary information that might help them to solve crimes. According to Presley, going online even garnered a couple of leads on previous cases.

As for the number of followers on both websites, Presley said those continue to grow.

"We have 361 Facebook followers and 264 Twitter followers," he said.

Presley thinks this is just the beginning of new age policing.

"As far as Twitter, we've heard it referred to as a police scanner for a digital age," he said.
