MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Are you ready for some football?  The Southern Heritage Classic is just around the corner.

Wednesday, event founder Fred Jones said it hasn't been an easy road, but he always had faith it could work.

"Its been a challenging 20 years, but I always felt that it could become a big event," he said. "You never know how people are gonna respond, and people started responding almost from the beginning."

Jones said you can expect the usual favorites this year, including the tailgate party, classic concerts and fashion show.  But, he's also added an extra event day for Sunday, and incorporating a couple of new surprises he hopes people will enjoy.

"We have diversity walks this year and we're gonna close out with a hair show," he said. "I call it 'The Classic Cat Walk and Hair Show,' so a lot for the entire community."

The highlight of course is the actual game, between Jackson State and Tennessee State. JSU President Dr.Ronald Mason said the game is a fun time for alumni and friends to get together.  He also had victory on his mind.

"The last six we've lost, most of them in overtime, but I can guarantee you that Jackson State is back now - on track - and I predict we will win this next classic," he said.

Activities for the Classic begin on Wednesday, September 9th with a classic Gospel concert.  Tickets for all Classic-related events, including the game, go on sale this Friday at 10:00am.
