MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Some Memphis moms are busy planning a large, public farewell party to bid adieu to the mayor, who says he'll leave office July 30.

When Mayor Willie Herenton steps down, there will be a reception in his honor at city hall. But a far less formal goodbye party will take place outdoors.

Myranda Alsaadi and Shauna Hardin will host a "Farewell Herenton" party near the lake and picnic area in Midtown's Overton Park.
While Alsaadi says she's glad to see the mayor of 18 years resign, she also says the party is all in good fun.

"Let's say 'Adios...have fun in what you do next!' You know, let's throw a party and live it up," she said.

Hardin says that regardless of how people feel about the mayor, there's a reason to celebrate.

"Whether you love him or hate him, celebrate his finding something new to do and enjoying what he's doing," she said.

Alsaadi and Hardin are using social networking sites Facebook and MySpace to spread the word about the party. They hope to attract some sponsors and vendors to the event.

Alsaadi says gathering with other Memphians to bid Herenton farewell will be something to remember.

"I've met him in person," she said. "You know, he was a really nice guy, but I feel it's time for Memphis to move forward."

If the mayor's plans don't change, the "Farewell Herenton" party will kick off at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 30.
