MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Congressman Steve Cohen joined community activists Saturday to bring a message of peace and hope to children and families dealing with violence on a regular basis.

Cohen spent the afternoon meeting with residents in the neighborhood around Danny Thomas and Vance.

He said he's working on initiatives to combat violence, including second chance programs and better education.

He also said he sponsored a bill to put 300 more officers on the streets.

"We're doing our job at the federal level, but whatever we do at the federal level is dependent on implementation at the local level," Cohen said.

He added that he hopes police director Larry Godwin will be able to hire officers quickly.

Organizer Wendol Lee welcomed the initiatives.

"Kids are being killed. They're shooting each other, they don't have jobs, they don't have food in the house - lights, water," he said.

Lee said the event, called "Save the Children", was an opportunity to show kids that people in the community care about them.
