The lawyers at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus may already be working on their lawsuit for trademark infringement. It seems that the Memphis City Government has stolen their name – the Greatest Show on Earth.

It's hard to imagine any three-ring circus anywhere that could top the one that takes place right here in Memphis at the City Hall every week. We may not be able to match Ringling Brothers' animal performances, and sure they've got some decent high wire acts, but clowns – we've got them beat on clowns. And our clowns will make you laugh until you cry.

That's about the time when you remember that you didn't elect these people to supply slapstick comedy. You voted for them in hopes that they would provide leadership. If Mayor Willie Herenton does in fact follow through on his promise to retire, let's hope that some sensible, electable person will come forward who can lead our community by example. Until then, Ringling Brothers does not need to bother to come back here.

Their show would just suffer by comparison.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
