Trio Leads Southern Am First Round

CORDOVA, TN - A trio of players finished tied for the lead Wednesday after one round of the 103nd Southern Amateur at storied Colonial CC. Recent University of Georgia grad Michael Green of Augusta, two-time NCAA Division II Player of the Year Jarin Todd of Woodinville WA and University of Arizona rising junior Jonathan Khan all posted 6-under-par 66 to poke their noses in front at the venerable tournament.

Green had to overcome two bogeys on the vulnerable par 5s for his hot start. Todd ran off four birdies in a row to key his round. And Khan, who had 8 birdies, confessed he was thinking about the exempt spot that goes to the Southern Am champ to play in the PGA Tour Arnold Palmer Invitational next spring. "That would be sweet,' he said. "But we have a long way to go."

Looming on a crowded leaderboad are six players just one stroke back at 67, including 1999 Southern Junior champ Michael Barbosa, who missed a chance to shoot 29 on his opening nine holes when his 35-foot birdie putt on the ninth hole lipped out.

Also at 67 is Rome, Italy native Andrea Pavan, 20, who once won an Italian pro tournament while only a 17-year-old amateur.

The international field of 168 players from 30 states and 12 foreign countries will be cut to 66 players and ties after the second round. The 72-hole event concludes on Saturday.
