Rain Dampens Field in 2nd Round Southern Amateur at Colonial C.C.

CORDOVA, Tenn. (AP) - A group of Georgians, led by Mark Silvers,

are heading the pack after a rain-shortened second round of the

103rd Southern Amateur at Colonial Country Club.

Mark Silvers, a Savannah, Ga., native, birdied five of the final

nine holes Thursday for a 66 and a 10-under-par total of 134.

Silvers holds a one-shot lead over Jonathan Khan of Tucson, Ariz.,

headed into Friday's play, when half the field ill complete the

second round. Five of the top ten leaders are from Georgia.

Heavy thunderstorms delayed play on Thursday by five hours.

After second round play is finished, the field will be cut to 66

players. The tournament concludes Saturday. The winner earns an

exempt spot to play in the PGA Tour Arnold Palmer Invitational next

spring in Orlando, Fla.

Silvers Leads Georgia Charge At Southern Am

 

CORDOVA, TN -- Mark Silvers, a decorated recent SEC scholar athlete, led a charge of Georgians in the rain-shortened second round of the 103rd Southern Amateur at Colonial C.C. Silvers, a Savannah GA native who rang up a 3.92 GPA as a finance major before recently graduating from South Carolina, birdied five holes on his incoming nine for a 66 and 10-under-par total of 134.

Silvers holds an overnight one-shot lead over Jonathan Khan of Tuscon AZ, though half the field are yet to complete their second round Friday morning. First-round co-leader Michael Green of Augusta is among four players 3 shots off the pace at 137. Five of the top ten leaders are from Georgia.

Heavy early thunderstorms Thursday delayed play five hours. Once the second round is completed, the field will be cut to the low 66 players who will immediately play their third round Friday afternoon. The tournament concludes Saturday with the winner earning an exempt spot to play in the PGA Tour Arnold Palmer Invitational next spring in Orlando.

First round co-leader Jarin Todd of Woodinville WA, at 6 under par, will start his second round early Friday.
