MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A man driving a stolen rental car crashed into another vehicle late Monday afternoon near Horn Lake Road and Mitchell, killing the driver of the other car.
The family of the victim, Iyanna Swindle, could not believe the mother of two children, pregnant with another, was dead. As police tried to determine if the suspect was being pursued at the time of the crash, family members tired to make sense of what happened.
"I can't believe she's gone," said her grandmother, Johnnie Wheatley. "Her baby's gone too. I don't understand how could they hit her like that?"
Wheatley said Swindle had just left her house, where she lived with her two children, and was on her way to her obstetrician. Swindle was driving southbound on Mitchell when a man driving a stolen car ran the red light and slammed into her.
"He was flying," said James Harris, a witness to the crash. "He swerved in and out of traffic at the red light and came around them. I don't think she knew what was coming. Hit her dead in the driver and passenger center."
Police knew where the man behind the wheel was because the car was stolen from a rental car company, and had a GPS in it.
"We do have a witness who aid they did see the blue lights," said Memphis Police Lt. Col. M.D. Jones. "At this time we're not sure if there was a pursuit."
What is clear is that Swindle, who just turned 22 last week, is dead.
"She was so sweet...she loved her kids," Wheatley said.
The man driving the stolen car had at least two warrants out for his arrest for theft of property. Late Monday night, he was in stable condition at The MED.
