MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The total number of murders in Memphis for the year 2009 stands at 81, Memphis police said Tuesday.

And while that number is high, it is down quite a bit.  Police say overall crime is down 10.5 percent when compared to this time last this year.  The total number of homicides has also dropped 15 percent.

According to Deputy Chief Joe Scott, the decrease can be attributed to officers working hard to rid the streets of guns, gangs, and drugs.

Scott said police also have a number of crime fighting tools and programs in place to help fight crime.

"Our crime fighting plan to undermine the root causes have an affect on homicides, aggravated assaults, and other crimes, and that's what we continue to do with our Blue Crush initiative," Scott said.

Police say overall crime is down by as much as 15 percent since 2005.
