SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - A 44-year-old Southaven man recently got a new lease on life, after receiving a new heart.

Elder Calvin Jones and his wife Angel say they are living witnesses to what the power of prayer can do. In 2008, Jones was living life on borrowed time, with congestive heart failure and not much hope for survival.

"I was placed on antibiotics for six months, and then in July they asked me to come into the hospital, and the only way they could fix my heart was to get a new heart," Jones said.

Paul Savitz died after brain injury on November 10, 2008. His widow, Kayelen said it was his wish to donate his organs to those in need. Jones, who was told by doctors he had literally weeks to live, received the call that would change his life forever.

"They called me about 5:30 in the morning and told me I came up number one for a heart out of South Carolina," Jones said.

He had the transplant on November 11, 2008, and was preaching again four months later. It was then he met Savitz's widow for the first time.

"It was an incredible feeling," he said. "Very undescribable. A lot of gratitude went out."

At one point, Jones' wife, Angel asked her to listen to her husbands heart beating inside Jones. The emotion was overwhelming for all of them.

Today the Jones family is practicing a new outlook on life.

"New heart, new star," Jones said.

Along with that new starts comes news that Calvin and Angel are having their first child in January. For more information on how you can become a donor, click here.
