ARLINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - People often move to the suburbs to get away from crime, but in Arlington, crime came to them this week in a very scary way.

The first robbery of the year there, in the parking lot of Vinegar Jim's restaurant, was a surprise to owner Kirk Wise.

"It's a close knit community," Wise said. "This is probably the biggest thing that's happened here in a while, as far as crime goes."

According to Wise, a Lakeland and an a Atoka man met up for dinner at Vinegar Jim's Wednesday night.  After the restaurant closed at 9 o'clock, the men walked around the depot square.

"They came back at 9:20," Wise said. "They were speaking outside their vehicle when the suspects pulled up."

According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department, two armed gunmen got out of a silver SUV.  The gunmen stole the pair's cash and cell phones, and then sped off in a getaway car a third man was driving.

"They had every right to be shaken up, but for the most part they were fine," Wise said of the victims.  "We don't see that very often out here in Arlington."

Wise is right.  So far this year, there have been no homicides, rapes, or business robberies in Arlington.  But overall, crime is up by 19 offenses.

The top problem is petty theft, up from 24 last year at this time to 40 this year.  The next biggest problem is theft from cars, up from 16 to 18, followed by residential burglaries, which are actually down this year, dropping from 13 to 11.

Wise hopes Arlington's first robbery of the year is also it's last.

"Hopefully we won't see it again," he said.

The sheriff's department points out that while crime is up by 19 offenses compared with last year, Arlington's population is also up.
