MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The date has been selected for a special election to decide Memphis' next mayor, as well as the person who will fill Tennessee State Sen. Paul Stanley's seat.

Tuesday, the Shelby County Election Commission selected Thursday, October 15 as the date for both elections.  The deadline for candidates to file papers to enter a race is 12:00 p.m. on September 3.

State and local laws differ over how quickly an election must be held when an office is declared vacant.  While the mayoral election was originally set for October 27th, the move to the 15th will allow dates to be combined, avoiding the expense of two elections.

Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen must still approve the date of the election for Stanley's seat.

Paul Stanley resigned last month after a sex scandal involving an intern in his office.  His last day in office will be August 10th.

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton resigned from his post on July 30th.
