MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Shelby County Sheriff's deputy jailer has been charged with dogfighting after authorities removed 14 pit bulls from his Whitehaven home.

Memphis police raided Jamario Taylor's house after they received a complaint about the dogs. Franschesca Morgan, who lives in the house, is also charged.

Police say the dogs were found chained together in six inches of mud. Several has visible bite marks and appeared to be malnourished, they said.

Authorities also found sticks used to break up fights. Some were bloodstained - one with the words "Screw PETA."

They also discovered dogfighting magazines, canine muscle-building supplements, and medicines used to treat wounds.

All 14 dogs are now at the city animal shelter.

Taylor vehemently denies the allegations, insisting he shows the pit bulls competitively. He brought out trophies and ribbons he says were awarded to his dogs.

"I am not a dog fighter," he said. "They're all friendly dogs."

While Taylor admits he let his dogs' rabies vaccinations expire last January, he says he doesn't abuse them.

"To hell with them. I'm not being cruel to my animals," he said, adding that he plans to fight to get his dogs back.

Taylor has been relieved of duty from the sheriff's department with pay while the case is being investigated.
