Parents say sex offenders live too close to bus stops

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - As Memphis City School students headed back to class Monday, there as controversy over some of  bus stops, as some parents said their children pass too close to the homes of some sex offenders.

Like most parents, Tony Rogers is concerned about his child's safety.  According to the state's sex offender website, at least five registered sex offenders live close to Dromedary Drive, the spot where Roger's 10-year-old daughter catches the bus.

One of the offenders lives less than a quarter of a mile away.

"These kids sit out here in rain, snow, in the heat, whatever, and they get tired and start walking around," Rogers said. If there are sex offenders that are close by, that's an easy target."

With current changes to Memphis City Schools bus routes this year, many students who live within two miles of their school will have to walk.  That bothers some parents, who say their kids will be too close to sex offenders.

"If there's a sex offender and they see these little girls or boys walking home by themselves, that's not right," Rogers said.

Memphis City Schools would not comment on camera but did release a statement saying, "The safety of our students has always been a top priority.  Parents who have concerns regarding the matter will need to contact our officials at the school or district office."

While state law says all registered sex offenders must live more than 1,000 from a school, playground or daycare, the law does not mention anything about a school bus stop, or kids walking by an offender's home.

"Legally there's nothing that can be done, I guess," parent Tonya Morton said. "Parents just be aware and watch out."
