HORN LAKE, MS (WMC-TV) - Students of DeSoto County Schools went back to class Monday without any fast food.

A program called 'No Fast Food Zone' has eliminated fast food from all of the district's schools.  Traci Suiter, principal at Shadow Oaks Elementary, said the program's goal is to sync mind and body.

"Basically you can't bring any fast food into the school," Suiter said. "Parents do not bring fast food in. We don't have soft drinks, sodas, or anything like that. It's all health and wellness."

So far, Suiter said, the program has worked well thanks to parental support.  In addition to the No Fast Food Zone program, a second program dubbed 'Project Fit' encourages students to burn off energy and build endurance.

DeSoto County boasts the largest school district in the state of Mississippi.
